The goal of this course is to help mediators understand how the pandemic has impacted our field and how to best respond to such impact.  Specifically, the course will cover how the pandemic has impacted individuals’ overall mental health, the nature of relationships and divorce rates, as well as clients’ behaviors.  Finally, the course will provide best-practices for mediators when responding to these challenges.

These include the definition of professional identity and the mediator’s identity; challenges in making the transition; and practices to help with that transition.

In this workshop participants will explore “critical moments” in their mediation cases and reflect on how these critical moment interventions affected the mediation’s outcome. The workshop is based on material from Michael Lang’s book, The Making of a Mediator. Registration will be limited for this workshop.

Domestic Violence & Family Mediation Training -- On-Line Presentation -- July 8-9, 2021

Requirements: For this on-line presentation you will need both video and audio capability to participate.

Completion of the Basic and Family Mediation Training course is recommended but not required.

This course provides an in-depth overview of domestic violence issues and its implication in the mediation setting. Through lecture, discussion and role plays, participants will learn to administer the domestic violence screening tool and how to determine whether mediation is appropriate.

About the Trainer:

Andrea Palmisano, Palmisano Mediation Services, has been a Virginia Certified general/family mediator and trainer for nearly 20 years specializing in work with at-risk youth, parent-teen mediation and a variety of restorative justice issues.  With a PhD in Psychology, Andrea has worked with families experiencing a variety of domestic violence issues.  Besides her mediation and training work, Andrea is an associate psychology professor at Tidewater Community College.
